The Public Properties Company (HPPC) S.A., a subsidiary of the Growthfund, has signed the contract for the implementation of the project “Restoration and Upgrading of the Building Facilities at Diros Caves, Laconia”, a project of strategic importance that significantly upgrades one of the country’s most prominent natural and cultural destinations.

The contract was signed on May 7, 2026, by HPPC’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Iro Hadjigeorgiou and the Chairman and CEO of the contractor “ALPHADELTA CONSTRUCTIONS S.A.”, Mr. George Andrianopoulos. The total contract value amounts to €8.736.914,96 (plus 24% VAT), with a total implementation period of 28 months. The project will be fully funded by HPPC’s own resources.

The project has been included in the Development Program for Contracts of Strategic Importance, following approval by the Government Committee for Contracts of Strategic Importance. This inclusion recognizes the project’s iconic character and the significant added value it creates for the local community and economy of Laconia, as well as for national cultural and tourism development.

The tendering process was carried out by the Project Preparation Facility (PPF) of the Growthfund in August 2025 and was concluded with the signing of the relevant contract.

The project involves a comprehensive program for the restoration, modernization and functional upgrading of the Diros Caves facilities. Its goal is the preservation, protection and sustainable development of a unique monument of natural, historical and archaeological interest. At the same time, it aims to enhance visitor attendance and the overall visitor experience, while respecting the environment and the cultural heritage of the region.

Within the framework of the project, the following are planned, among others:

  • The construction of a new building for the Museum of Neolithic Culture of Mani Caves.
  • The restoration, renovation and functional upgrading of existing building facilities, including the entrance, snack bar, laboratories, restrooms and restaurant.
  • The upgrading of the surrounding landscape and outdoor areas.
  • The construction of new shelters and specialized load-bearing structures.
  • The development of modern electromechanical networks and lighting.
  • The modernization of the existing biological wastewater treatment plant.

Construction work is expected to commence within the coming days.

HPPC’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Iro Hadjigeorgiou, stated: “The restoration and upgrading of Diros Caves is an investment of high symbolic and practical value for our cultural heritage, local development and Greek tourism. Through a comprehensive plan of interventions, HPPC ensures the sustainable utilization of a unique natural and cultural monument, while significantly upgrading the visitor experience and the region’s infrastructure. I would like to express my gratitude to the Project Preparation Facility (PPF) of the Growthfund for its significant contribution to the conduct of this tender. We consistently continue to implement projects with a strong developmental and social footprint, creating value for local communities and the country as a whole.”
